Akropolis Performance Lab will audition male artists with baritone or bass singing voices for long-term ensemble membership. This is not a show-specific call.
This is a rare opportunity to join a highly regarded ensemble-based company with deep artistic lineage and an international reputation. APL is committed to rigorous work in a highly focused and personally supportive environment. Our aesthetic signature is Theatre of Polyphony. We seek artists with a sincere commitment to ensemble development, a strong connection to or curiosity about their cultural heritage, and a desire to explore their individual potential through the vehicle of performance prioritized as artistic expression over commercial endeavor.
Ensemble membership involves participation in ongoing, weekly physical/vocal training, company-led workshops, Salons, as well as the development and performance of APL’s 2015-16 artistic projects, and more. The full details of APL’s commitment to and commitment expected from members are articulated in our company contract, which we will share with top candidates and which is renewed annually.
The work will challenge you physically and vocally, as an artist and as a person. If you are not familiar with our company or our work, please review our artistic principles and mission, as well as our aesthetic vision, company ethic, and Manifesto of our Artistic Ethos. Please also watch our performance and training clips on YouTube. Applicants who do not demonstrate an educated understanding of our organization before requesting an audition will not be invited to audition.
Akropolis auditions are not conventional. Prepare to participate in a preliminary interview and several practical, working sessions involving highly physical group activity, work with song, and the development of individual action. These working sessions will include opportunities both specific to auditionees and integrated within APL’s regular weekly training sessions (Saturday/physical, Wednesday/vocal).
Because our work always includes dynamic, precise a cappella vocal music, actors must have an intelligent musical sensibility.
By “intelligent musical sensibility,” we mean that you
- distinguish between pitches,
- match pitches,
- work relationally with melody,
- hear and sing parts,
- work flexibly with resonance,
- engage vocal work as a process of inquiry.
Extensive previous vocal training is not required.
Committed to strengthening a more multicultural artistic community and the principle of diversity, we strongly encourage applications from historically underrepresented groups.
The ensemble’s primarily work locations are in Lake Forest Park and Sand Point.
Please seriously consider your intentions in requesting an opportunity to audition for APL. If you’re merely curious about our ensemble and methodologies, our connection with and extension of Grotowski-based work — or if you just want an opportunity to broaden your auditioning experience — do not request an audition. There are other opportunities to engage and explore our company practices and methods, including workshops.

After seeing “GLAS NOCTURNE” earlier this summer, it is clear to me that Akropolis Performance Lab is not only in line with my preferred theatrical aesthetics but also is an organization that can offer me something new as an artist. There are things to learn from this company and a distinct possibility to continue my growth as an artist. That’s something I do not see or feel from other organizations in our area. I would be very excited to audition.
