APL’s quarterly Sunday Salons are community gatherings to explore classic and/or provocative plays and share live music. Held in APL’s new Downstairs Studio in the Lavy home, each Salon is a unique and engaging assembly of Artists, Intellectuals, Provocateurs, Friends, and Family. We read, drink, eat, and let the discussion go where it will.

THE PLAY
Dreamlandia explores the terrain between illusion and reality. Set in the borderlands between Mexico and Texas, this haunting play vibrates with the clash of cultures, NAFTA, narcotics, and illegal immigration. In an ever-changing world, family, cultural and sexual identities collide. The play is Inspired by Life is a Dream (1635, Pedro Calderón de la Barca), the towering achievement of Spanish drama.
THE PLAYWRIGHT
Author of more than 20 plays, Octavio Solis is considered one of the most prominent Latino playwrights in America. With works that both draw on and transcend the Mexican-American experience, he is a writer and director whose style defies formula, examining the darkness, magic, and humor of humanity with brutal honesty and characteristic intensity. His imaginative, ever-evolving work continues to cross cultural and aesthetic boundaries, placing him among the great playwrights of our time.

We distribute the play digitally. For the day of the Salon, please bring your own printed copy or a device to view the file. We have wifi.
FOOD is potluck. Please bring a dish and/or drink to share. Theme according to the play… or not!
SEATING is ample, but feel free to bring a cushion if you prefer the floor (it is carpeted).
LOCATION: A day or two before the event, we will send our address to everyone who has RSVPd. NOTE: The location has a lot of stairs to navigate (15 just to enter), and, unfortunately, no current access options to avoid them.
SCHEDULE
4:00pm Arrivals. Mingling and food/drinks.
5:15-5:30pm: Reading begins, to be followed by discussion.
10:00pm: End time is a best guess. Leave when you need to; we allow the discussion to run its course.
